The Learning Experience’s Summer Reading Guide

During the summer months, parents often find themselves looking for new and creative ways to entertain their children, often without much luck. In these moments of frustration, it’s easy to forget you can easily have access to entire worlds full of new and exciting adventures right at your fingertips: all you need to do is open the pages of a new book. Take a look at our summer reading guide.

Reading to your child during the summer offers so much more than just a way to keep them entertained while spending quality time together. It also helps expand their imaginations, teaches new lessons, and helps them prepare for future scholastic achievement. According to the National Commission on Reading, the single most important factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home. For school-aged children, reading during these months is essential to keep their learning skills from slipping down the summer slide.

To get you prepared for a summer’s worth of reading, our Curriculum Department has put together a list of age-appropriate books for children ranging in age from infants to second graders. Before diving into the list, here are a few tips on how to enhance your child’s reading experience:

1. Use a calendar to keep track of how many books they’ve read during the summer

2. Celebrate each time you and your child read a new book with little awards or rewards

3. Promote interaction by asking questions beyond the story topic

4. Act out the adventures from the books you’re reading: pretend you are going to the moon and back, taking a train through the mountains, or even riding in a boat down a river.

5. Create your own props to help act out a story

6. Empower your child by allowing him or her to pick while book they’d like to read next
